We, Too, Sing America: American Songs Brought Beyond the Veil is a review of American songs performed from the perspective of what W.E.B. DuBois coined the “double consciousness” of the Black American experience. In concert, it embodies the idea that I, a Black American, can sing songs from musicals that I would not be cast in professionally because of the color of my skin. It’s acknowledging that the wonderful trove of concert music by Black American composers is rarely mentioned in American song anthologies. I contrast that with genres like the blues and Negro spirituals- incredibly sorrowful, yet universally acclaimed. This celebration of black anguish is what has elevated Black concert performers for generations. And when that warring spirit is overcome to create positivity, We, Too, Sing America. This is Marcus’ second career recital and he is thrilled to bring it to the heart of so much culture in the West Village.
